Dermal Filler Dissolve (Hyalase)

About the Treatment

Filler dissolving is a medical procedure that uses hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers. It works by breaking down the bonds that hold filler molecules together, allowing the body to safely reabsorb them. It is commonly used to correct unwanted results, complications, or overfilling. A small amount of hyaluronidase is injected directly into the area containing filler. The enzyme acts quickly, with results often visible within hours. In some cases, more than one treatment is required. Because hyaluronidase breaks down both natural and synthetic hyaluronic acid, the treated area may temporarily lose volume before returning to its natural state. Patch test: A test dose may be performed to check for allergy before proceeding. Hyaluronidase is generally very safe in trained hands. Common side effects include swelling, redness, bruising, or tenderness at the injection site. Less common but serious risks include allergic reaction, infection, or excessive dissolving of natural hyaluronic acid. Your practitioner will discuss these with you. Seek urgent help if you experience severe swelling, difficulty breathing, or widespread rash. Pre-treatment advice * Avoid anti-inflammatories (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen) for 3 days unless prescribed. * Avoid alcohol, fish oils, Vitamin E, Gingko Biloba, and St John’s Wort for 3 days prior. * Do not attend if you are unwell or have an active infection (including cold sores). * Inform your practitioner of all allergies, medical conditions, and medications. * A patch test may be carried out before your first treatment. Post-treatment advice * Redness, swelling, and tenderness are common and usually settle within 48 hours. * Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the treated area for 12 hours. * Do not apply makeup for 12 hours. * Avoid alcohol, strenuous exercise, heat exposure, saunas, or steam rooms for 48 hours. * Delay facials, skin treatments, and lasers for 2 weeks. * Apply a cool pack if swelling is uncomfortable. * Contact your practitioner urgently if you experience severe pain, spreading redness, significant swelling, or signs of allergy (rash, itching, difficulty breathing). Results are often immediate but may take up to 24–48 hours to settle. Follow-up may be required to ensure the filler has dissolved as intended. Your skin will return to its natural state, and new treatment can usually be planned once the area has fully healed.
