What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable gels made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found within the body. Hyaluronic acid is highly water-attracting, helping to plump, lift, restore volume, and smooth the skin.
Results vary between individuals but typically last between 6–18 months, depending on the treatment area, product used, and your own metabolism.
Dermal fillers are generally safe when performed by appropriately trained medical professionals using licensed products. However, as with all medical procedures, risks and complications can occur and these will be discussed during your consultation.
Where Can We Use Dermal Fillers?
Lips: Enhances volume, shape, definition, and symmetry while restoring deep hydration and smoothing fine perioral ("lipstick") lines.
Cheeks: Restores lost mid-face volume, creates structural lift, and helps soften nasolabial folds by re-supporting the cheek matrix.
Chin & Jawline: Defines and contours the lower face, strengthens a weak profile, and sharpens the jawline to reduce the appearance of jowls.
Nasolabial Folds: Smooths the deep static lines running from the nose to the mouth corners, reducing structural heaviness.
Marionette Lines: Softens the creases extending downwards from the mouth corners to lift a tired or downturned expression.
Tear Troughs: Corrects under-eye hollowing and dark shadows by restoring local volume and improving light reflection for a refreshed look.
Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty: Refines the nasal profile by smoothing dorsal bumps, elevating the tip, and improving overall symmetry.
Temples: Replenishes hollow temporal wasting to balance the upper face and create a subtle, natural lift to the brows.
Concerns That Dermal Fillers Can Treat
Facial Sagging: Subtly lifts and re-supports descending tissues to improve mid-face balance and jawline definition.
Under-Eye Hollows: Fills structural tear trough hollows to minimise dark circles and refresh tired eyes.
Fine Lines & Wrinkles: Smooths stubborn static creases that remain visible even when the face is completely at rest (e.g., around the mouth, nose, and chin).
Volume Loss: Restores natural fullness and density to areas that appear sunken or hollowed due to ageing, such as the cheeks, lips, or temples.
Asymmetry: Enhances overall facial harmony by correcting imbalances in prominent features like the lips, chin, or nasal profile.

Treatment Side Effects
Contact the clinic immediately if:
• Any eye pain or visual disturbance, including blurred vision, double vision, or loss of vision
• Skin blanching (whitening), dusky discolouration, or purple mottling
• Discoloured patches or blotches that resemble a spreading bruise
• Severe pain or pain that progressively worsens
• Significant swelling that rapidly worsens
• Increasing redness, heat, or signs of infection

• Skin that becomes increasingly swollen or increasingly itchy
Pre-Treatment Advice
• Avoid alcohol for 24–48 hours before treatment.
• Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oils, Vitamin E, Gingko Biloba, garlic supplements, and St John's Wort for 3 days before treatment where possible, as these may increase the risk of bruising and bleeding. Do not stop any prescribed blood-thinning medication without consulting your prescribing doctor.
• If you are prone to bruising, oral arnica may be helpful for a few days before treatment.
• Avoid sunbeds, excessive sun exposure, and tanning for 1 week before treatment.
• Avoid scheduling treatment within 2 weeks of any major social event, holiday, vaccination, or significant dental treatment where possible.
• Inform your practitioner of any recent aesthetic treatments performed elsewhere, including previous filler treatments.
• Update your practitioner about any changes to your medical history, medications, or allergies.
• Reschedule your appointment if you are unwell, including coughs, colds, active infections, or cold sores.
• Arrive with a clean, product-free face.
Post-Treatment Advice
• Most people can resume normal daily activities immediately after treatment.
• Swelling, redness, tenderness, bruising, and mild asymmetry are common and usually settle within a few days, although some swelling can persist for up to 2 weeks.
• Avoid touching, pressing, rubbing, or manipulating the treated area for at least 72 hours unless specifically advised by your practitioner.
• Avoid sleeping directly on the treated area and sleep with your head slightly elevated on the first night if possible.
• Avoid make-up for 12–24 hours to reduce the risk of infection.
• Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, swimming pools, and excessive heat for 48 hours.
• Avoid alcohol for 24 hours following treatment.
• Avoid active skincare products (e.g. retinoids, exfoliating acids, and strong vitamin C products) for 48 hours.
• Avoid facials, facial massage, chemical peels, microneedling, laser treatments, and deep pressure/manipulation of the treated area for at least 2 weeks.
• Avoid significant dental treatment and vaccinations for 2 weeks after treatment where possible.
• Drink plenty of water to support hydration and optimal results.
• Use SPF 30+ daily and avoid direct sun exposure until the area has fully settled.
• If you have a history of cold sores, treatment around the lips may trigger a recurrence despite preventative measures.
• Please allow up to 2 weeks for the filler to fully settle before assessing your final result.
• If swelling persists, a cool compress (wrapped in a clean cloth) may help. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
