What Are Prescription Hair Loss Treatments and How Do They Work?

Prescription medications are often considered the gold standard first-line treatment for many types of hair loss. Unlike regenerative treatments, which stimulate follicle repair and scalp health, prescription medications work by addressing the underlying biological causes of hair thinning and helping to slow or prevent ongoing hair loss.

Following a comprehensive consultation, Dr Mäla will recommend the most appropriate medication based on your diagnosis, medical history, examination and treatment goals.

Options may include:
Minoxidil (topical or oral) – helps prolong the hair growth (anagen) phase, improve blood supply around hair follicles and stimulate new hair growth. It is suitable for both men and women.

Finasteride or Dutasteride (men only) – reduce levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone primarily responsible for male pattern hair loss. By reducing DHT, these medications help slow further hair loss and may encourage thicker, healthier hair over time.

Spironolactone (women only) – an anti-androgen medication that reduces the effect of male hormones on hair follicles and is commonly prescribed for female pattern hair loss, particularly in women with hormonal hair thinning or features of androgen excess.

Prescription medication may be used alone or combined with regenerative treatments such as PRP, polynucleotides, Nouveau Visage® Regen3 Complex™, or the Signature Hair Restoration Programme to provide a more comprehensive approach.

Please note: The initial Hair Prescription Consultation (£50) includes your doctor-led assessment and personalised treatment plan. If a prescription is appropriate, this is charged separately at £40, which includes your private prescription and your remote follow-up review. Medication costs, pharmacy dispensing fees, blood tests and any additional review appointments are not included.

Who is Suitable For Prescription Hair Loss Treatment?

Prescription medication is most effective when started early, before significant follicle loss has occurred. It may be suitable for both men and women experiencing progressive hair thinning, particularly those with:
• Male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)
• Female pattern hair loss
• Perimenopausal or menopausal hair thinning
• Hair loss associated with hormonal changes
• Long-term progressive thinning
• Hair loss where medical management is recommended alongside regenerative treatments

Not everyone is suitable for prescription medication. Before treatment, Dr Mäla will carry out a detailed medical assessment, including your medical history, current medications and, where appropriate, blood pressure monitoring and blood tests.

Depending on the medication prescribed, treatment may not be appropriate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, trying to conceive, have significant liver or kidney disease, uncontrolled cardiovascular disease, low blood pressure, certain hormonal conditions, or other medical contraindications.

Depending on the medication prescribed, ongoing monitoring may include blood pressure checks, blood tests or review appointments to ensure treatment remains safe and effective. The initial consultation (£50) and subsequent prescription fee (£40) do not include medication costs, pharmacy dispensing fees, blood tests or any additional review appointments that may be required.

Your treatment doesn't end with receiving a prescription. The £40 prescription fee includes your remote follow-up review, allowing us to assess your progress, monitor your response to treatment and make any appropriate adjustments. Some medications may require additional monitoring, blood tests or further review appointments to ensure treatment remains both safe and effective.

What Results Can I Expect?

Hair loss medications work gradually and require consistency. It is important to understand that their primary aim is often to slow or stop further hair loss, although many patients also experience improvements in hair thickness, density and overall hair quality.

It is common to experience a temporary increase in hair shedding during the first 6–12 weeks, particularly with minoxidil. Whilst this can be concerning, it is usually a normal part of the treatment process as weaker hairs are replaced by healthier new growth.

Visible improvements generally begin after 3–6 months, with maximum benefit often taking 6–12 months. Individual results vary depending on the cause and severity of hair loss, genetics, age, hormonal factors and adherence to treatment.

Hair loss medication is usually intended as a long-term treatment. If treatment is discontinued, the underlying hair loss process typically resumes and any benefits gained may gradually be lost over several months.

For many patients, the best outcomes are achieved by combining prescription medication with regenerative treatments such as PRP or Nouveau Visage® Regen3 Complex™.
