What Are Polynucleotides and How Do They Work For Hair Loss?

Polynucleotides are highly purified DNA fragments that support the body's natural tissue repair and regeneration. Originally developed for regenerative medicine, they are increasingly used in aesthetic medicine to improve skin quality and scalp health.

When delivered into the scalp using medical microneedling or targeted injections, polynucleotides help create a healthier environment for hair follicles by reducing inflammation, stimulating fibroblasts, improving hydration and encouraging collagen production around the follicle. This supports healthier scalp tissue and may improve the function of weakened hair follicles.

Unlike prescription medications, polynucleotides do not alter hormone levels, and unlike PRP, they are not derived from your own blood. Instead, they work by enhancing the body's natural healing processes and improving the quality of the scalp environment in which hair grows.

Polynucleotides may be used as a standalone treatment or combined with PRP, prescription medication or other regenerative therapies as part of a comprehensive hair restoration plan.

Who Is Suitable For Hair Polynucleotide Treatment?

Hair polynucleotides are suitable for both men and women experiencing early to moderate hair thinning or those wishing to improve overall scalp health.

Treatment may be beneficial for:
• Male and female pattern hair loss
• Perimenopausal and menopausal hair thinning
• Stress-related hair shedding (telogen effluvium)
• Hair thinning following illness
• General age-related hair thinning
• Poor scalp health
• Dry, inflamed or sensitive scalp
• Patients looking to complement PRP or prescription medication

Because hair loss has many different causes, your consultation will include a comprehensive assessment to determine whether polynucleotides are appropriate. Where necessary, further medical investigations or blood tests may be recommended before treatment.

Treatment may not be suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in the presence of active scalp infection or uncontrolled inflammatory scalp disease, or where significant medical contraindications exist.

What Results Can I Expect?

Polynucleotides work gradually by improving scalp quality and supporting the long-term health of existing hair follicles.

Many patients first notice improvements in scalp comfort and overall scalp health before visible changes in hair quality. As healthier follicles progress through the natural hair growth cycle, improvements in hair thickness, density and strength typically become noticeable after 2–3 months, with continued improvement over the following months.

For best results, an initial course of 3 treatments, performed every 2–4 weeks, is recommended. Maintenance treatments every 6–9 months help support ongoing follicle health.

Although polynucleotides can significantly improve the environment surrounding existing follicles, they cannot regenerate follicles that are no longer viable. Results vary depending on the underlying cause and severity of hair loss, genetics, hormonal factors and overall health.
