Hair Restoration: PRP with Biotin
Doctor led aesthetic clinic, west midlands
What Is PRP Hair Restoration and How Does It Work?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is one of the most established regenerative treatments available for hair restoration. It uses a concentrated sample of your own blood, making it an entirely autologous treatment with no foreign products being introduced into the scalp.
A small blood sample is collected and placed into a medical centrifuge, which separates and concentrates the platelets. These platelets are naturally rich in growth factors that help regulate tissue repair, reduce inflammation and stimulate cellular regeneration.
The concentrated PRP is delivered via a series of precise injections into the scalp. For patients who prefer a more comfortable treatment experience, PRP can also be delivered using medical microneedling, allowing the growth factors to penetrate through thousands of controlled micro-channels whilst simultaneously stimulating collagen production within the scalp.
PRP works by encouraging dormant or weakened hair follicles to become more active, improving blood supply around the follicles, supporting healthier scalp tissue and prolonging the active growth (anagen) phase of the hair cycle. Rather than creating new follicles, it aims to improve the health and performance of follicles that are still viable.
It is suitable for both men and women, and may be used alone or alongside prescription medication, hair transplantation, or other regenerative treatments.
Who Is Suitable For PRP Hair Restoration?
PRP is most effective when hair follicles are still alive but becoming weaker or less productive. Treatment is therefore recommended as early as possible rather than waiting until significant hair loss has occurred.
PRP may be suitable for those experiencing:
• Male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)
• Female pattern hair loss
• Perimenopausal and menopausal hair thinning
• Postpartum hair loss (following medical assessment)
• Stress-related hair shedding (telogen effluvium)
• Hair thinning following illness or surgery
• Age-related hair thinning
• Poor hair quality or fragile hair
• Patients preparing for or recovering from hair transplantation
Before treatment, Dr Mäla will carry out a detailed consultation to identify the likely cause of your hair loss and determine whether PRP is appropriate. In some cases, further investigations such as blood tests or GP assessment may be recommended before treatment begins.
PRP may not be suitable for patients with significant bleeding disorders, platelet disorders, severe anaemia, active scalp infection, active cancer, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or certain autoimmune conditions.
What Results Can I Expect?
Hair restoration is a gradual process and results should be assessed over months rather than weeks.
Many patients notice reduced hair shedding within the first 2–3 months, followed by gradual improvements in hair thickness, density and overall quality between 3–6 months. Maximum benefit often continues to develop for 6–12 months following treatment as healthier hairs continue through their natural growth cycle.
For best results, we generally recommend an initial course of 4 treatments, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every 4–6 months.
Although PRP can significantly improve the health and function of existing follicles, it cannot regenerate follicles that are no longer viable, and results vary depending on the cause, severity and duration of hair loss, age, genetics, hormonal factors and overall health.
PRP is often combined with prescription medication or advanced regenerative treatments to optimise long-term outcomes.
