What Are Milia?

Milia are small, firm white or yellow cysts that develop when keratin, a naturally occurring protein found within the skin, becomes trapped beneath the surface. They are completely harmless but can persist for months or even years without treatment.

Unlike spots or whiteheads, milia do not contain pus and cannot simply be squeezed out. Attempting to remove them at home often causes unnecessary trauma to the surrounding skin without successfully removing the cyst itself.

Milia most commonly occur around the eyes, cheeks, nose and forehead, although they can develop anywhere on the face or body.

How Are Milia Removed?

At MPower Clinic, milia are removed using a sterile, fine needle to create a tiny opening in the surface of the skin. The trapped keratin is then carefully extracted using a precise, controlled technique.

Only the smallest opening necessary is created, allowing the keratin to be removed whilst minimising unnecessary trauma and preserving the surrounding skin, reducing the risk of scarring and pigmentation changes compared with attempting removal at home.

Most milia can be successfully removed during a single appointment, although larger, deeper or multiple lesions may occasionally require further treatment, or treatment with Cryotherapy instead.

Can Milia Come Back After Treatment?

The milia removed during your appointment are unlikely to return in exactly the same location. However, some people are naturally more prone to developing milia, meaning new lesions may appear elsewhere over time.

Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed way to prevent milia from forming, although good skincare, appropriate exfoliation where suitable and avoiding unnecessary trauma to the skin may help reduce their occurrence.

If new milia develop in the future, they can usually be removed quickly and safely during a further appointment.
