Mole/Lesion Removal - Cryotherapy
Doctor led aesthetic clinic, west midlands
What is CryoPen® Cryotherapy?
CryoPen® cryotherapy is an advanced, non-invasive medical procedure utilising a high-pressure jet of nitrous oxide at -89°C to deliver controlled, precise freezing directly to unwanted skin blemishes. This rapid cooling crystallises the intracellular fluid, causing cryonecrosis destroying the target cells, without harming the surrounding healthy tissue.
The frozen lesion naturally thaws, necroses, forms a protective scab, and gradually falls away over several weeks, allowing healthy new skin to regenerate seamlessly beneath. It serves as a virtually painless, scar-minimising alternative to traditional surgical excision or thermal cautery, requiring no anaesthetic and offering minimal downtime for both cosmetic and therapeutic removals.
What Lesions Can It Treat and What Is the Treatment Protocol?
Cryotherapy is highly effective at eradicating a wide range of benign skin imperfections across the face and body, including skin tags (acrochordons), seborrhoeic keratoses, solar lentigines (age and sun spots), benign flat moles, cherry angiomas, viral warts or verrucae, and more. The clinical treatment protocols are carefully structured based on the depth and nature of the target tissue.
Standard Benign Lesions: Most skin tags, sun spots, or superficial blemishes resolve successfully after a single targeted treatment, though larger or deeper lesions may occasionally require a second or third session spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
Viral Lesions (Warts & Verrucae): Due to the resilient, deeply rooted nature of these viruses, warts and verrucae are significantly more resistant. As a minimum, they require a course of 3 treatment sessions performed at 1 week intervals, followed by a 4 week clinical break before reassessing. Stubborn or long-standing viral lesions may ultimately require 6–9 sessions to completely clear the viral matrix.
What Happens During the Safety Assessment?
Patient safety is our absolute clinical priority, meaning every appointment begins with a rigorous screening check to assess certain lesions.
Dr Mäla evaluates the lesion against high-risk criteria using dermatoscope equipment. If there any concerning features are identified, and there has been no specialist review and clearance already (by a GP/Dermatologist), then removal will be postponed following specialist assessment. In these instances, the appointment is charged at a flat £75 assessment fee, and we will discuss external referral options, either by providing a detailed referral letter to your GP or transferring the remaining balance towards a private consultant dermatology referral.
If you notice a lesion changing in size, shape, colour, symmetry, border, or sensation (e.g. itching, bleeding, or crusting), please seek assessment promptly.

Possible Side Effects
Normal: Mild discomfort, redness, swelling and blistering are expected following treatment. The treated lesion will usually darken, form a scab and naturally fall away over the following 1–6 weeks, depending on the area treated.
Rare: Infection, prolonged healing, scarring, changes in skin pigmentation (lighter or darker skin), temporary numbness or incomplete lesion clearance may occur. These risks will be discussed during your consultation.
Urgent: Contact the clinic immediately if you experience increasing pain after the first 48 hours, spreading redness, significant swelling, pus, fever, or persistent bleeding from the treated area.
Pre-Treatment Advice
• Attend with the lesion clean and free from creams or make-up.
• If treating a wart or verruca, softening the skin beforehand may improve treatment.
• All lesions are assessed before treatment to ensure they are suitable.
Comprehensive pre-treatment instructions and suitability information will be provided after booking.
Post-Treatment Advice
• Redness, blistering or scab formation is expected as the lesion heals.
• Do not pick scabs and keep the area clean.
• Healing usually takes 2–6 weeks depending on the lesion.
Comprehensive aftercare instructions will be provided following your treatment.
